Jones’ century in vain as Usk lose last-ball thriller
After last week’s narrow defeat, Usk lost by the margin of two wickets off the last ball of their match at home to Penarth. On a cloudy afternoon at the Athletic Club ground, the visitors won the toss and inserted Usk. Despite the loss of an early wicket, the hosts batted solidly with Ahmed Bapusha (54) and Mike Jones (101) being the stars of the show. At 126-2 in the 34th over, Usk were well set to post a challenging total. However, after Bapusha was dismissed (his 54 including 4 fours and a six), it was left to Jones to hold the innings together as wickets fell steadily at the other end. Jones was the final wicket to fall in an eventual total of 224-7 from their 50 overs. His 101 had included 13 fours and a six. This left Usk a little short of where they had wanted to be.
Penarth’s reply got off to a steady start finding themselves 91-2 in the 25th over, both wickets falling to Tom Robinson. The top order continued to bat sensibly reaching 147 in the 37th over before top scorer, N. Morgan, was third to go for 47. Penarth’s middle order managed to keep up with the rate and needing 9 to win with two overs to go and five wickets in hand, a Penarth victory was a cert. Back came Usk though and Huw Waters nearly pulled off the impossible, finishing as he did with the impressive figures of 10-2-17-3. However a leg bye from the final delivery of the game gave victory to Penarth.
