Usk finish season with Twycross double-header

With all their league matches completed, Usk entertained Leicestershire tourists Twycross on both Saturday and Sunday to finish off the season

On Saturday, 1st team skipper, Tom Robinson, won the toss and elected to bat. Despite the loss of an early wicket, this proved a sound decision as Richie Morris (42) and Phil Stephens (39) put on 75 for the second wicket. Richie Rees then took the innings by the scruff of the neck as he struck a quick 56, which included 7 fours. At 150-4 after 30 overs, the hosts looked well placed to pose an imposing total. However, the tail got bogged down, and Usk struggled up to 207-7 from their allocated 40 overs. For Twycross, Jordan Lee took three wickets.

Twycross’ reply got off to an even worse start than Usk’s with three wickets falling inside the first 9 overs. With Jack Stedman and Tom Robinson each picking up a brace, Twycross collapsed to 76-7 in only the 24th over. The Twycross pair of N Lee (65*) and Jordan Lee (30*) then shared an unbeaten stand of 106 to take the visitors up to 183-7 after their 40 overs, falling 25 runs short of their target.

Twycross were soon to avenge their defeat the next day. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat. Against an inexperienced Usk attack Twycross made solid if unspectacular progress through their innings as they reached 191-9 from their 40 overs; S Horton (36), C Beestone (59) and J Cox (48) being the main contributors. For Usk, Dave Bond, Greg Peacock and Julian Smith each picked up a couple of wickets.

Usk’s reply never really got off the ground as, reminiscent of the following day, the chasing team lost three wickets inside the first 10 overs. Only Julian Smith (40*) offered any resistance against his old team, as Usk were bowled out in the 29th over for 132. R Oakey with five wickets took the plaudits for the visitors.
