Holders get knocked out of Welsh Cup

On Sunday Usk entertained Newport at the Athletic Club Ground. Newport, who had knocked Usk out of the Macey Cup, just a week earlier, completed something of a cup double by eliminating the Welsh Cup holders in only the 4th round of the competition.

Neil Perrett won the toss and elected to bat. The hosts got off to the worst possible start as they lost a wicket from the first ball of the match. Oliver James came in to join Mark Tamplin and the two of them repaired much of the damage by putting on 77 for the 2nd wicket. James then fell for a stylish 50. His knock included 9 fours. With the hosts losing their 3rd wicket with the score at 104-3 in the 28th over, Usk were well set to post a challenging total. From this position though Usk lost wickets regularly and, but for Mike Jones’ unbeaten 56, they would have struggled to reach their eventual score 183 all out. Jones’ half century included 6 fours. With Usk dismissed with 13 balls unused, their score looked about 20-30 shy of where they had wanted to be.

Newport’s reply got off to the best possible start, putting on 97 for the first wicket; Clayden (60) and Cleeve (33) both batting solidly. This put Newport firmly on top. Usk then took two quick wickets in the 27th over to get back in the game. It was then Newport’s turn to lose wickets in rapid succession as they collapsed to 145-7 in the 39th over. From the final 6 overs, Newport required 37 to win with just 3 wickets in hand. Newport reduced the equation to 4 from the last over with 2 wickets remaining. Tom Robinson, bowling the vital last over, took a wicket with his first delivery to give Usk hope. The game was settled with the fourth ball of the over: with two required the ball went for leg byes and Newport were able to celebrate at the holder's expense.
