Firsts abandoned again; Seconds draw

The first team entertained Cardiff, whilst the seconds travelled away to their Cardiff counterparts.

In conditions virtually identical to those on Saturday, Neil Perrett won the toss and inserted the visitors. Cardiff made steady, if spectacular progress, as the openers put on 57 for the first wicket, before Ollie James struck in the 16th over. Unfortunately for Usk, the next Cardiff wicket did not fall until the 42nd over, after French (116) and Ryan Watkins (94*) had put on 148. Despite two quick wickets for Owen Watkins, Cardiff then took the attack to their hosts and scored 86 from the last 5 overs (51 from the final 3 overs) as Alun Thomas smashed a lightning fast 51. There was some small consolation or Usk, as Mark Tamplin picked up a couple of wickets in the last over.

With the players having to go off or rain during the Cardiff innings, Usk had the revised target of 280 from 45 overs. This was always going to be an outside bet, though Usk did begin at a decent pace, taking 54 from the first 11 overs. However, the hosts had lost three wickets by this stage and had to be mindful of seeing out their overs at the very least. Mike Jones (67*) and Neil Perrett (49) then added 108 for the fourth wicket before Perrett fell; his 49 including 6 fours and 2 sixes. Owen Watkins then joined Mike Jones, but in the 40th over, with the time at 8 o’clock, and the light on an already overcast day quickly fading, they left the field, and the match was abandoned. By this stage Usk had reached 182-4. Jones’ unbeaten 67 had included 5 fours and 4 sixes.

Whilst down in Cardiff, Usk seconds did at least force the only result of the weekend as they drew with their hosts. With the poor weather forcing this match to start late, the sides were to have 39 overs each. The hosts won the toss and chose to bat. This looked an excellent decision as Hobbs (70) and Powell (33) put on 92 for the first wicket. However, as they had against Miskin on Saturday, the seconds fought back and restricted Cardiff to 194-9. Richie Rees was once more amongst the wickets, taking 8-1-21-4. There was also a brace for both Jake Roderick and Dave Egerton.

Usk’s reply got off to the worst possible start as confusion between the Kear brothers resulted in Tony being ran out in the 3rd over. From this unpromising beginning, the visitors got them selves back into the game. At 109-3 in the 28th over and 7 wickets in hand, Usk had a sniff of victory. Usk then lost three quick wickets, including the important one of Richie Rees, who had capped a fine all-round performance with 51. His knock had included 4 fours and 2 sixes. It was then left to the lower middle order to ensure that the game was not lost, which they did successfully, as Usk finished on 125-6, picking up some very useful bonus points in the process.
