Usk IIs thrashed by Sully IIs
It was back to normal for Usk, after last week’s winning draw at Bridgend, with a fourth defeat in five league matches so far this term. Sully comfortably beat Usk by 7 wickets.
It had started so brightly for Usk. On a sunny, but breezy afternoon at the Athletic Club ground, Richie Rees, skippering the side for the second week in succession, won the toss and chose to bat. This looked a wise move as Usk made a reasonable start to their innings. Owen Watkins (63) and Richie Rees (33) took the attack to the Sully, and Usk were well set to post a challenging target, finding themselves 90-2 in the 22nd over. Unfortunately, after Rees was bowled, the middle order then collapsed in spectacular fashion with numbers 5,6 and 7 scoring a single run between them. This left Watkins to bat with a tail laden with junior cricketers. However, Watkins was next to go. His fine knock had held the innings together and included 8 fours and 2 sixes. Usk were finally dismissed for 127 in the 38th over, managing to earn a bonus point, but had left them 100 runs short of a decent score. For Sully, Bruce finished with fine figures of 10-2-31-5.
Sully’s reply began before tea, with the openers playing out an uneventful 5 overs. After the break Sully progressed smoothly to their target. Usk did manage to pick up three wickets and earn a bonus point in the process. Jeremy Wyatt taking a brace, and Julian Smith the other one.
