Usk seconds lose again
Having been beaten heavily on the opening day of the season away to Abergavenny, Usk were looking to set the record straight on Saturday at the Athletic Club ground. Unfortunately, it was Abergavenny who walked off with the spoils once again, as Usk’s problems continued.
On an overcast day, keeping with the disappointing summer weather encountered thus far, the visitors won the toss and immediately inserted Usk. As has been their wont this season, Usk got off to a competent enough start, with the top four batsmen: Mike Kear (21), Tom Lee (20), Owen Watkins (12), and Jake Roderick (25) all getting starts. Unfortunately for Usk nobody else was able to reach double figures. Usk were all out from the final ball of the 37th over, having posted only 128. For Abergavenny all five bowlers took wickets with Barnsley and Timpson returning the most impressive figures.
This total was never going to be enough and so it proved. The omens were bad for Usk from the start when Watkins had a confident leg before shout turned down in the opening over. From that point on Abergavenny never looked back and cruised to victory by 8 wickets in the 36th over. Wickets from Kear and Gavin Jones at least ensured that Usk picked up a bowling point to go with their solitary batting point. For Abergavenny their openers got the bulk of their runs with Viveash and Lilly scoring 39 and 41 respectively.
