2nds lose against highflying Chepstow
Like their counterparts in the 1st XI, the 2nds also began their match promisingly only for their match to end in disappointment.
On a cloudy day in Chepstow, and with a damp pitch, Usk won the toss and elected to bat. This appeared to be a good move as the openers proceeded without too many difficulties. At 30-0 after 10 overs Usk had made a solid start. Chepstow fought back removing a couple of Usk wickets, but the visitors were still nicely placed at 83-2 after 20 overs. However, the customary collapse was not far away as Usk subsided to 118-7. Usk did well to reach 170 all out. This was mainly thanks to Mike Kear, last man out, who had batted throughout the innings for 104. Kear’s innings had included 10 fours and 1 six. 170 always looked a little light for table-topping Chepstow.
Chepstow progressed with ease to their target. A couple of wickets from James Osbourne at least ensured that Usk would walk away with a bowling bonus point. However, Chepstow reached the 171 they wanted with 12 overs to spare. Bennett (82) and Roberts (45) provided the bulk of the host’s runs.
