2nd XI News
Usk II succumb to second defeat of the season

After last week's humiliation in Abergavenny, things could not really get a lot worse for the second XI. In their first home match of the season Usk were looking to bounce back against Pentyrch.
The match had been reduced to 44 overs per side. Mark Chalker won the toss and asked the visitors to bat. Usk bowled well, restricting Pentyrch to 169-8. None of the batsman really got away with Morgan and Bennett both getting in the thirties. For Usk Tom Robinson, Jake Roderick, debutant Julian Smith and Richie Rees all chipped in with wickets, with Rees the pick of the bowlers with 3-34.  Unfortunately, in reply, Usk’s top order picked up where it had left off the previous week. In the 13th over Usk found themselves 27-6. From this unpromising position Chalker (28) and Jimmy Spencer (56*) fought back taking the score up to 97 before further loss. At this stage an unlikely victory was still on the cards. However once Chalker departed the Usk lower order was unable to offer further resistance and they were dismissed for 115 in the 40th over. Usk eventually lost by 54 runs. Grosset and Matthews each finished with three wickets. For the second week in a row Spencer had top scored; his unbeaten 56 included 5 fours and 1 six.
