Usk narrowly fail to beat Crossy in thriller

It all began so well for Usk 1st XI at home to Croesyceiliog in the League on Saturday.

On a cloudy and cool day at the Athletic Club, Neil Perrett won the toss and decided to have a bowl. This decision was soon vindicated as Croesyceiliog were reduced to 11-3 in the 5th over; Owen Watkins and Jason Cook immediately amongst the wickets. It was then that the visitors achieved a partnership that would turn the match on its head. Bakari (105) and Beacham (75) put on 166 for the fourth wicket before Bakari fell in the 41st over. However, Croesyceiliog failed to capitalise fully on this postion, and ended up being bowled out with two balls of the innings remaining for 226. Perrett blew the tail away with a spell of 5.4-0-19-4.

Usk’s chase began cautiously as the openers put on 51 in the first 13 overs. However, it was at this stage that the hosts lost their first wicket. Usk kept up with the rate, thanks to a string of useful partnerships. Opener Mark Tamplin held up an end, departing for 79 in the 41st over. His innings included 8 fours. Skipper Perrett also weighed in with a valuable 47, which included 3 fours. It seemed as if their efforts were about to pay off as Usk required 6 from the final over with 4 wickets in hand. However, with the score at 221 Usk lost 3 wickets, leaving numbers 10 and 11 to score 5 from the final ball for victory. Usk only managed a single ending on 223-9.
