Usk get knocked out of Macey Cup
Usk Cricket Club’s weekend began on Friday evening with the 1st XI travelling down to Spitty to take on Newport in the Quarter Finals of the Macey Cup. Last season’s finalists contested a hard fought game with Newport running out winners by 15 runs.
On a cloudy evening at the Sports Village, the hosts won the toss and elected to bat. Newport’s top order got off to a steady start with the openers the openers posting 47 for the first wicket at a run a ball. Newport’s top order continued to bat sensibly and did not lose their second wicket until the 14th over with 90 on the board. With so many wickets in hand for the final few overs, Newport were well placed to mount an assault, which they did successfully finishing on 137-9 from their 20 overs. Usk bowled and fielded well to restrict the score by picking up 6 wickets in the final 3 overs. The pick of the Usk bowlers was Owen Watkins with figures of 4-0-34-4. For Newport Harris (36), Millichip (39) and Roberts (24) all contributed.
A target of 138 was always going to be a stiff one. Despite the early loss of both openers, Usk got off to a flyer and were well up with the rate at the halfway stage, but crucially they had lost 4 wickets. In the middle overs the innings got bogged down and the rate began to escalate. Top scorer Mike Jones (34) did his best to hold things together, but once he departed the Usk cause looked all but lost. With two wickets remaining they required 22 from the last over for victory. It was never really on and Usk were all out for 122 with 2 balls to go.
Unfortunately, poor weather caused Saturday's match away to Tondu to be cancelled without a ball being bowled.
